Water Dreams
Rivers and oceans inspire my work. It refers to water giving us pleasure as well as connections. Old civilizations built ports by the rivers to connect one city with another. Rivers allowed commerce and connections between communities
My inspiration comes from the ancient civilizations that navigated the waters with primitive tools. I considered building a rafting in their ways. Navigation, as they practiced it, is both an art, a spiritual practice, and to explore trav a science. It requires extensive knowledge of the night sky and how it changes based on latitude and throughout the year. With this knowledge, the rising and setting of stars can serve as a compass, a clock, and a means to calibrate latitude. If navigated correctly, a raft can take us across the world, as proven by Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki raft, which sailed for three months across the ocean, demonstrating that in the past, ancient civilizations sailed across the oceans, discovering new worlds.
The other side of the concept of dreaming waters is that we must be aware that water is not just essential, but also sacred. We must respect and take care of it, as it is the source of all life.
My work is about connecting with the community and bringing art to a place where people can participate and see art as part of their reality. Installation @ARTCRAWL HARLEM
